The effect of sports hospitality on performance

It might be a common conception that the sports hospitality received during away days/tournaments has little effect on actual sporting performance, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

A stand-out example of this can be the England national football team’s performance over the past two major tournaments, which are of course a stark contrast to those that came before. Gareth Southgate has made no secret of the changes that have been made to St George’s Park and both himself and the team have reaped the rewards, appearing in a final and semi-final in the last two tournaments alone (we best go that one step further in Qatar!).

Look, we’re not saying that improved facilities and accommodation for the players is the sole reason for their significant improvement, but it has definitely played a part. The players themselves will tell you that. Their new surroundings allow them to feel comfortable at all times while enjoying the camaraderie that playing for your national team offers. This camaraderie in turn improves team spirit and as a result performances on the pitch have been at a higher level.

Another example of elite clubs recognising the need for the ultimate sports hospitality was Real Madrid’s accommodation for the Champions League final. The 13-time champions booked out the whole Aubergue du Jeu de Palme, in Chantilly, so the players could focus completely on the task in hand. And again, we’re not stupid, we understand that Real’s budget is not reminiscent of 99.99% of the rest of the sporting world, but it’s also refreshing to see elite teams recognising the link between hospitality and performance.
